What’s the best type of lawnmower for tough grass on an uneven surface?

Swampy_Bogtrotter asked:

I’ve had very limited success with hover-mowers, and metal bladed rotary mowers.
I’ve never tried a cylinder mower, but I suspect it would be better able to handle the tough conditions of my back garden.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  1. Dr Green says:

A metal bladed rotary is your best bet so long as you keep it under 4 four inches long.

Go for a reliable brand and a big engine. Dr Green

  3. Okay, I must have slipped off into the Twilight Zone. I’ve been cutting fields of grass for years and have rebuilt many mowers. A hover mower and a cyclinder mower is new to me. Dr. Green, up there, says metal bladed, so long as it’s not over four inches long.?! What’s a four inch long metal blade doing on a mower? I’m with Bob P.. He says to get a John Deere. That’’s a really tough mower and a wise choice. Just be sure to clean the garden by hand first. No rocks, pipe, bags, clothes, wire, boards, or anything like this should come in contact with any mower. Then you can crank her up and first gear it the first time around with the deck up high. Then you can see if you missed any rocks or what ever. Then you can reset your deck lower and finish it off. It sounds as if you don’t need a push mower for this job. Borrow your neighbors. heh

Push mower or tractor? Whatever you choose, id suggest a Briggs and Stratton , Kohler or Honda engine. Ive had the best luck with Briggs motors.

Maybe a walk behind string trimmer? They look like a giant lawn mower but instead of a blade they use a nylon string.
Or, a high wheel rotary mower self-propelled. hotdogseeksbun

  9. Hondu says:

Almost all of the lawn and garden equipment manufacturers sell a version of a walk behind sickle mower. These machines work excellent on uneven ground and will cut grass and weeds up to small diameter brush. Check with your local dealer or look for walk behind sickle mowers on the net. Hondu
